Identify and correct three beginner casting faults

The examiner performs three faults; you diagnose and correct using the 6-step method.

The task

Identify and correct three casting faults commonly made by beginner casters while learning the overhead cast and roll cast. The examiner, acting as a student, selects and performs the faults; the examiner will repeat a fault if asked. Identify the fault first, then correct it using the examiner as your student, using the 6-step method and at least one appropriate teaching method of your choice.

Required performance standards

General performance standards apply to every task — narrow loops (≤ 4 ft, measured 3–4 ft back from the nose), a straight fly leg, loops similar front and back and approximately in-plane, a line and leader that unroll completely, no ticking, and slow to medium line speed. See the exam overview for the full list.

  • A) An examiner, acting as a student, selects and performs the casting faults and will repeat a fault if asked.
  • B) Identify the fault as performed by the examiner.
  • C) Correct the fault, using the examiner as a student.
  • D) The three faults are chosen by the examiner from the following list, and one must be a roll cast fault.
  • Overhead casts: 1) over-bending the wrist; 2) poor application of force; 3) failure to remove slack; 4) poor tracking; 5) poor timing.
  • Roll casts: 1) forward stop that is too low; 2) D-loop placed directly behind the caster (hooking); 3) delivery cast crosses the anchor causing a collision.

How to pass it

  • Intent: to show you can identify and correct faults common to beginners. You must use the 6-step method here.
  • Identify first, out loud, before you correct anything — the task scores identification and correction separately.
  • Know the fault list cold, including the roll-cast faults; one of the three will be a roll-cast fault.
  • Use the examiner as a student: explain, demonstrate, have them try it, then give feedback.
  • Ask for a repeat if you need one — the examiner will repeat the fault on request.

Drills

  • Rehearse all eight faults, three of them roll-cast, and diagnose each in one sentence.
  • Run the 6-step method aloud for each fault until the sequence is automatic.
  • Have a partner perform random faults so you practise identifying without warning.
