Part 1 · Distance Casts · Task 14 · ≈5 minutes
Double hauling while false casting at 50 ft
Four or more consecutive hauled false casts, including pick-up and delivery.
The task
Casting 50 ft (15.2 m) throughout the task, demonstrate at least 4 consecutive false casts while double hauling, including on the pick-up and delivery casts.
Required performance standards
General performance standards apply to every task — narrow loops (≤ 4 ft, measured 3–4 ft back from the nose), a straight fly leg, loops similar front and back and approximately in-plane, a line and leader that unroll completely, no ticking, and slow to medium line speed. See the exam overview for the full list.
- Haul length, timing and force application must be appropriate for the length of line carried and must be consistent between forward and back casts.
- Line tension must be maintained between the line hand and the first rod guide.
- False casting must be relaxed and efficient.
How to pass it
- Consistency between forward and back casts is the standard — a good forward haul and a weak back haul fails.
- Keep tension between the line hand and the first guide throughout; a slack haul hand is the usual cause of lost distance and tailing loops.
- The pick-up and the delivery are both hauled, not just the false casts in between.
- Relaxed and efficient: the haul is a short, smooth acceleration that ends with the rod, not a jerk.
- Haul length should suit the carry — do not over-haul 50 ft of line.
Drills
- Haul-timing drill: haul only on the stop, freezing the haul hand afterwards.
- Practise four to six hauled false casts at 50 ft, then shoot on the delivery.
- Film the line hand to check for slack and for consistent haul length.
