The two classic manuscripts
These are the founding documents of the certification programme, reproduced in full by FFI:
- The Essentials of Fly Casting — Bill and Jay Gammel (1993, PDF). In 24 pages the Gammels summarised what actually makes casting work regardless of style — the Five Essentials. Note FFI’s caveat: some definitions and terms have changed since 1993, so pair it with the current definitions. Bill Gammel revisited the topic in The Loop (July 2016), and Bruce Richards in Fall 2023 — the latter is reproduced in the study guide.
- Observations on Teaching — Mel Krieger (1993, PDF). A clear, concise document on teaching fly casting, written by a founding member of the programme. Krieger’s own preface: he hoped readers would find something useful “beyond the ’let the rod do the work’ instruction that most of us started with”.
Teaching faults
- Faults and Fixes (PDF) — the fault library, and the natural companion to Task 19, where an examiner performs three beginner faults for you to identify and correct.
- CI Development Videos — the CI teaching workshops and the faults-and-fixes video.
Lesson plans
Lesson plans written by current instructors, reproduced in the study guide and on FFI’s site:
- Pickup and Laydown (PULD) — Willy George, MCI & THMCI.
- Reach Mend — Trisha Campbell, CI.
- Wrist Wedge Protocol — Jonathan Walter, MCI.
- Key Elements in a Casting Lesson Plan — Willy George, MCI & THMCI. The template to build your Part Two lessons from.
Introductory teaching topics
FFI publishes short video-and-handout introductions to the subjects beginners meet first — useful when you build Part Two lessons: why the Pickup and Laydown matters, what a roll cast is and why you need it, the fundamentals of fly casting, what false casting is, and what a change-of-direction cast is. These are the same subjects as Tasks 16–18.
Continuing education
FFI runs ongoing education for instructors, including online sessions and the Annual Fly Casting Workshop. Membership is required for parts of this library — join or renew if you want the full set.
Naming and links follow FFI’s Resources for Teaching page, which should be treated as the current source.
