Teach a beginner the roll cast

Purpose, steps, anchor, D-loop, 180° principle and safety. On water if available.

The task

Teach a beginner caster to make a roll cast in which the fly line rolls out completely with the leader relatively straight. An examiner must act as a student during this task.

Required performance standards

General performance standards apply to every task — narrow loops (≤ 4 ft, measured 3–4 ft back from the nose), a straight fly leg, loops similar front and back and approximately in-plane, a line and leader that unroll completely, no ticking, and slow to medium line speed. See the exam overview for the full list.

  • A) Address the purpose of the cast.
  • B) Teach the roll cast in a stepwise manner.
  • C) Describe an anchor, a D-loop and their functions.
  • D) Address the 180 degree principle for anchored casts.
  • E) Address safety.

How to pass it

  • Intent: to show you can teach the roll cast at beginner level.
  • Teach it as if on water, even if you are using a roll cast tool to simulate water tension.
  • Anchor and D-loop need to be defined and explained functionally — what each one does for the cast.
  • The 180 degree principle must be stated explicitly: anchor, D-loop and delivery aligned on the target line.
  • Safety is a scored expectation: think fly, line, rod tip, people behind you and hook placement.
  • If water is available the exam may reorder Part One to finish with Tasks 9–11 and start Part Two here.

Drills

  • Teach the roll cast to a beginner and have them roll the line out completely.
  • Rehearse the anchor / D-loop / 180° explanation in three sentences.
  • Rehearse your safety briefing out loud — it is easy to forget under exam pressure.

Lesson 24: How to teach the Roll Cast The playlist has no number for this one: it is filed as the roll-cast teaching lesson.

From the CI task walkthrough playlist — see that page for the full task-by-task map (the playlist numbers the teaching tasks differently).

The task wording follows the FFI Casting Instructor Performance Exam evaluation form updated 20 February 2025. The coaching notes above are unofficial study aids — the exam is assessed only against the form.
