Part 2 · Teaching · Beginner · Task 16 · ≈7 minutes

Teach a beginner to form a casting loop and change its shape

Define a loop, then demonstrate narrow, wide and tailing loops.

The task

Explain and demonstrate to a beginner caster how to form a casting loop and change its shape.

Required performance standards

General performance standards apply to every task — narrow loops (≤ 4 ft, measured 3–4 ft back from the nose), a straight fly leg, loops similar front and back and approximately in-plane, a line and leader that unroll completely, no ticking, and slow to medium line speed. See the exam overview for the full list.

  • A) Define a loop and describe its fly leg, rod leg and nose, and explain how a loop is formed.
  • B) Describe the rod tip path / loop shape relationship.
  • C) Demonstrate a narrow loop, a wide loop with a convex fly leg, and a tailing loop.

How to pass it

  • Intent: to show you can explain and demonstrate how a loop forms and how a caster changes its shape.
  • Start from the definition — fly leg, rod leg, nose — then build the explanation on the rod tip path.
  • The tip path relationship is the core teaching point: straight tip path gives a narrow loop, convex gives wide, concave gives a tail.
  • Demonstrate while you explain; the exam requires the explanation to match the demonstration.
  • This is a beginner task: no jargon without explanation, and keep it short and organised.

Drills

  • Teach it to a real beginner and ask them to describe a loop back to you.
  • Rehearse the three demonstrations back to back: narrow, wide (convex fly leg), tailing.
  • Practise the whole explanation in under two minutes without notes.
