Teach an intermediate the cause and correction of tailing loops

Describe, explain the tip path, and correct both common causes.

The task

Teach an intermediate caster the cause and correction of tailing loops.

Required performance standards

General performance standards apply to every task — narrow loops (≤ 4 ft, measured 3–4 ft back from the nose), a straight fly leg, loops similar front and back and approximately in-plane, a line and leader that unroll completely, no ticking, and slow to medium line speed. See the exam overview for the full list.

  • A) Describe a tailing loop and its effects on casting.
  • B) Describe the rod tip path / tailing loop relationship.
  • C) Explain two common caster actions that result in tailing loops — inappropriate force application and a casting arc that is too narrow — and describe how to correct them.
  • D) Explain how creep might contribute to a tailing loop.

How to pass it

  • Intent: to show understanding of tailing loops and the ability to teach cause and correction at intermediate level.
  • The tip path is the explanation: a concave path of the rod tip makes the fly leg dip and cross the rod leg.
  • Both causes must be covered, each with a correction: force application (smooth acceleration, no jab) and arc (widen the arc as the line lengthens).
  • Creep needs its own mention: drifting forward before the stroke removes arc and contributes to the concave path.
  • Intermediate level means you can use casting terms — but the correction still has to be practical and demonstrable.

Drills

  • Deliberately cast tails using each cause, then fix each one while narrating the correction.
  • Practise the creep explanation: what it is, why it costs arc, how to stop it.
  • Teach it to an intermediate and check they can name the two causes afterwards.
