Part 1 · Accuracy Casts · Task 13 · ≈5 minutes
Accuracy at 20, 30 and 45 ft (off-side)
The same three targets, everything off-side.
The task
Off-side accuracy: demonstrate off-side accuracy casting to targets as described in Task 12. The required performance standards are as described in Task 12.
Required performance standards
General performance standards apply to every task — narrow loops (≤ 4 ft, measured 3–4 ft back from the nose), a straight fly leg, loops similar front and back and approximately in-plane, a line and leader that unroll completely, no ticking, and slow to medium line speed. See the exam overview for the full list.
- All of the Task 12 standards apply, including the 15 in (38 cm) tolerances at 20 and 30 ft and 18 in (46 cm) at 45 ft.
- The whole task is performed off-side, as defined in the General Information section.
- Hauling, holding the line in the line hand and shooting line are permitted, as in Task 12.
How to pass it
- Identical to Task 12, but the rod stays off-side for every cast and every target.
- Bending at the waist is the practical way to reach the off-side position without changing hands.
- Watch your trajectory off-side; the flatter delivery is harder to control with the body rotated.
- Same miss-and-recover rules: fly in hand after missing the 20 ft target, previous target after missing 30 or 45 ft.
Drills
- Off-side target ladder: 20, 30, 45 ft, three casts each, scored.
- Film from behind to confirm the rod tip stays off-side throughout.
- Practise the waist-bend setup as a separate drill so it becomes automatic.
