George V. Roberts Jr.’s Master the Cast (Ragged Mountain Press / McGraw-Hill, 2002 and 2005) is a short course, not a reference: seven lessons that start with the roll cast and end with casting off-vertical and hauling, plus two chapters of mechanics in front of them. Roberts writes like an instructor standing behind you — one idea, one drill, then the next thing.
The book is here chapter by chapter, so you can read a lesson on a phone without opening a 7 MB PDF, and the illustrations come with it: all 157 photographs and drawings are placed where they belong, with the book’s own captions beside them.
The text was checked line by line against the PDF. Two chapters — the glossary and the troubleshooting tables — are two-column reference tables that do not survive reflow, so they are shown as the printed pages instead.
