How do you teach the double haul?
Only after a one-handed cast to 45 or 50 ft and the grass drill: haul short as the rod passes the blue cone, return the hand at once, and build it from hand-only drills with eyes closed.
Wait until they cast one-handed to 45 or 50 ft and do the grass drill; the haul only adds line speed. Lay out an 80-ft rope, fly 40 ft from each end, a blue cone mid-stroke, orange cones seven feet either side.
What the instructor says
- Start at the blue cone. As the rod passes it mid-stroke, pull down and return at once — a down-up.
- Short, with slack below the hand. Enough loose line that the haul pulls line, not the rod; long hauls open slack and return late.
- Drill ladder. Hand only, mirror your hand, your hand moving theirs, then haul on the cone.
- Eyes closed. When the rod bends, haul; the loops come out better than when they watch.
- Into the air. Cast without a haul first, then add little hauls past the cone, tip up.
- Faults. Hauling before the cone, a long haul, no slack under the hand.
Putting it to work
- Mark the rope and cones once, then film yourself to check the haul starts past the middle.
- Reset the loose line under your hand before each repeat.
