Appendix D — Review questions

As you prepare for the exam the following questions can guide you in organizing your understanding of each exam task.

  • What does this cast have to do with casting instruction? Why is it used? What are the basic requirements to learn this cast?
  • How is this cast used when fishing?
  • How would you teach this skill/cast? (Include analogies, progression of the lesson, say-see-do techniques.)
  • What are common faults in this skill/cast? How would you identify them? Know Bruce Richards’ Six-Step Method. How would you correct them?
  • What are the primary Five Essentials involved in performing this task/skill?
  • What drills would you suggest when practicing this skill/task?

Sample Questions by Topic

Loop Control

  • What are the rod tip paths that produce a narrow loop, wide loop and tailing loop?
  • Name two actions that result in a tailing loop.
  • How does the path of the rod tip relate to the size of the loop?
  • How does the 180-degree principle apply to overhead casting?
  • If the casting arc is too wide for the bend of the rod which loop shape will result: wide, narrow, or tailing?
  • When comparing a bamboo rod with a fast action graphite rod, which will have a wider casting arc when false casting similar loops?

Line Control

  • What is a mend?
  • Why would you slip line or not slip line during a reach mend?
  • What fishing situation would you use a pile cast?
  • What is an elliptical cast and when might you use it?
  • What are the fishing benefits of learning how to cast from the vertical plane to a more horizontal plane?
  • What casting adjustments need to be made when casting from a vertical plane to a horizontal plane?
  • When would you want to use a reach mend?

Roll Casts

  • Describe the 180-degree principle for anchored casts as it applies to the roll cast.
  • In what fishing situation would you use a roll cast pickup?
  • If too much force is applied too early during a roll cast what happens to the loop?
  • What are at least three reasons we do a roll cast?
  • Is a roll cast a good change of direction cast?

Accuracy Casts

  • How does fly line trajectory affect accuracy?
  • What changes in timing (pause) occur when casting from 20’ to 45’ (with similar casting speed)?
  • How do I correct my fly landing to the right or left of the target?

Distance Casts

  • How much line can we typically shoot?
  • When casting a distance of 75’, approximately how much line will need to be carried in the air during false casting?
  • As the casting distance increases what happens to the length of the haul?
  • When teaching the double haul, how do you teach when the haul begins?
  • What results happen if the haul is too early?

Teaching Tasks

  • When you are demonstrating a cast where should the observer stand relative to you and the sun?
  • What is the biggest risk in your instructional approach when teaching a beginner?
  • What teaching tools would you employ to demonstrate rod tip path to a beginner?
  • When would the PULD cast be used?
  • Where should an instructor stand to best identify poor tracking?
  • Define Gammel’s Five Essentials and integrate each in Task 21 Adjustments to change distance from 30’ to 50'.
  • What is the most important concept to convey in teaching Task 22 when casting with wind?
