How does fly line trajectory affect accuracy?

Trajectory decides how far the fly has to fall once the loop opens — and that fall is where accuracy is lost. Cast flat and the loop falls a bit, but the fly is still far above the target when it opens and must drop a considerable distance — the odds of it landing straight on the target are not high in wind. Tilt the casting arc so the rod tip path aims down at the target, and the line and leader unroll much closer, leaving a short fall.

The fly leg of the loop goes where the rod tip path points, so you change trajectory by changing the orientation of the casting arc. How much depends on distance:

Short casts (20 ft): a steep pitch, up in back and down in front.

Long casts (45 ft): a shallower pitch.

Tasks 12 and 13 ask for 20, 30 and 45 ft targets, each needing its own trajectory change. Loop control matters too: the guide ties straight fly legs to the most accurate loops.

Source

From the CI Study Guide (2025) (PDF), “Varying Casting Arc and Trajectory” and Tasks 12–13; terms from the FFI Fly Casting Definitions (Trajectory).

What changes in timing (pause) occur when casting from 20 ft to 45 ft at similar casting speed?

When casting speed stays the same, the pause gets longer as the line gets longer: expect a longer pause at 45 ft than at 20 ft.

The Fifth Essential says the pause between casting strokes varies in duration with the amount of line outside the rod tip. Two things set that duration — line length and line speed. Hold speed constant and only length is left, so the longer line takes longer to straighten. Start each stroke when the line and leader are almost but not quite straight. Too short a pause and the line has not unrolled, giving slack and a whipcrack or an undulating line; too long and the line falls and ticks.

Distance also changes trajectory. At 20 ft the pitch is steep, up in back and down in front; at 45 ft it is shallower, with loops kept to 4 ft or less.

Source

From the Fifth Essential and the trajectory section of the CI Study Guide (2025) (PDF), and Task 21’s rule that the pause needs to be longer as the cast lengthens; terms from the FFI Fly Casting Definitions (Pause, Trajectory).
How do I correct my fly landing to the right or left of the target?

Left and right misses are tracking problems, not aiming problems. Tracking is the lateral path of the rod tip during the casting stroke; when it curves sideways the fly leg curves with it and the fly lands off line.

Find the body motion. Poor tracking is often caused by twisting the wrist or rotating the shoulder or body during the casting stroke; a fly leg curved right or left mirrors that curved tip path.

Aim the reel. Keep the reel in one plane and pointed at the target throughout the casting cycle; watching reel orientation catches a sideways tip path.

Check your alignment too. The 180 Degree Principle asks for the fly line and rod tip path to be aligned with the target at the start of each stroke, both laterally and vertically; line swung out to one side gives a curved fly leg.

Read the result, then drill it. Targets tell you whether the fly landed too far left or right, and tracking errors are fatal at the 30 and 45 ft targets. Cast at 45° above a tape measure: a straight tip path lands the line alongside the tape, not feet away.

Source

From the tracking faults and target work in the CI Study Guide (2025) (PDF) and the Horizontal Casting Drill in Appendix A; terms from the FFI Fly Casting Definitions (Tracking, 180 Degree Principle).
