In what fishing situation would you use a roll cast pickup?
When the fly and leader have sunk, have gone slack or have snagged: the roll cast pickup peels them off the water and gets the line back in the air.

Each one defeats an ordinary lift: a sunk line must be broken out of the surface film before the rod can load, slack must come out before the rod can bend against anything, and a fly fast on a rock will not come away on its own. The roll cast pickup does all three, and its delivery loop unrolls above the surface and raises the fly clear rather than dragging it through the water.
A pickup is not a presentation: it leaves the line aerialized and ready, so follow the roll cast delivery with a controlled back cast and deliver on the next forward cast. Tilt the trajectory up in front and lower in back — 1:30 rather than 1:00 back, 10:30 rather than 10:00 forward — so you have time to change direction without ticking the water.
