What is a common purpose of a perfection loop?

The perfection loop makes a stable end loop that lies in line with the standing end, commonly used for a loop-to-loop connection between fly line and leader.

  • A. Fastening a reel to its seat
  • B. Forming an end loop for a loop-to-loop connection
  • C. Adding weight to a fly
  • D. Aligning deer-hair tips

Answer: B. A perfection loop forms a fixed loop in the end of a line, and its common job is to make one half of a loop-to-loop connection.

The loop is tied so that it lies in line with the standing end. That alignment is the point: a stable loop that sits straight instead of kicking to one side can meet another loop without a twist. The usual pairing is a perfection loop in the end of the fly line and a matching loop in the butt of the leader. Thread one loop through the other, and the leader can be changed in seconds without cutting the fly line.

It is most easily tied in the hand, and it is the easiest way to make a small loop in the end of a leader or tippet. Keep the loop small — this is an end loop, not a way to fasten a reel, add weight or align deer-hair tips.

At the bench, tie it at the leader butt before you go, so a loop-to-loop change on the water costs you seconds rather than a whole leader.
