True. Under the current definitions a double haul is pulling fly line through the rod guides on consecutive casting strokes, with the line hand returned towards the rod hand during the pause.

Answer: true.

Two elements make it a double haul rather than a single haul:

  • Consecutive strokes. A single haul pulls line through the guides during either the forward or the back casting stroke. A double haul hauls on consecutive strokes — back and forward — within the cycle.
  • The return. After the haul, the line hand goes back towards the rod hand during the pause. That return is part of the definition, not an optional tidy-up.

The return is what makes the next haul possible: it restores the hand’s travel so there is line to pull again. It also leaves the line hand ready and the line controlled through the pause, instead of parked at the end of the haul.

In a lesson, the cue is the pair: haul on the stroke, return during the pause, then haul on the next stroke. Say the sequence out loud while the student casts slowly, because a haul on one stroke only is a single haul, whatever it looks like at speed.
