Point P is the point where the fly line suspended from the rod tip first touches the water.

  • A. The fly position in every cast
  • B. The deepest point of the D loop
  • C. The first water contact of line suspended from the rod tip
  • D. The tip of the leader butt

Answer: C.

The definition has a job. Point P marks where the suspended line meets the surface, so it fixes one end of the water contact in an anchored cast. That is what lets an anchor be described and measured; when the anchor is too long and Point P ends up behind the caster, the definitions name the fault trunking.

The distractors are worth knowing for what they are not. The fly’s position is not Point P — the fly is part of the anchor, but Point P is about where the line first touches. The deepest point of the D loop is a feature of the loop, not a contact point on the water. The leader butt is a connection, not a point created by water contact.

In an exam answer, use the definition’s wording: the line suspended from the rod tip, its first contact with the water. “First” is part of it — the point is the beginning of the water contact, not any later touch.
