  • A. Tracking
  • B. Translation
  • C. Hooking
  • D. Shooting line

Answer: D. Releasing line after the stop so that more of it sits outside the rod tip is shooting line.

The definition has two parts, and both must be there: the release comes after the stop, and the result is an increase in the amount of fly line outside the rod tip. Slipping line is the near neighbour — line released together with rod movement, either before or after a casting stroke. Both leave more line outside the tip; timing and mechanism separate them.

The other options come from different parts of the vocabulary. Tracking is the lateral path of the rod tip during a casting stroke. Translation is a linear change in the position of the rod butt. Hooking is an anchored-cast fault in which the D loop swings around and behind the caster.

In a lesson the word sets up the next question: when did the release happen? After the stop, and you are teaching shooting line. With rod movement before or after a stroke, and you are teaching slipping line — and the point you make about the release changes with it.
