Which term describes the lateral path of the rod tip during a casting stroke?

Tracking is the lateral path of the rod tip during a casting stroke; trajectory, by contrast, is the loop's direction relative to the horizon.

  • A. Tracking
  • B. Trajectory
  • C. Overhang
  • D. Anchor position

Answer: A. Tracking is the lateral path of the rod tip during a casting stroke.

It is a side-to-side measure: did the tip travel out and back along the same line, or wander? The other options name different things. Trajectory is the direction the loop travels relative to the horizon. Overhang is the amount of running or shooting line outside the rod tip during casting strokes. Anchor position is the location and layout of the anchor relative to the caster, and belongs to anchored casts.

Confusing tracking with trajectory is the common error, and it makes diagnosis sloppy. Where the loop travels relative to the horizon is a trajectory question. Where the rod tip went, side to side, is a tracking question. The definitions keep the two apart because they describe different parts of the cast.

Tracking is also only part of the rod tip path, which the definitions describe as the straight or curved path the tip travels during a cast. The lateral path is the slice tracking names — not the whole story.
